AMA request - Michael Marquardt aka Theymos /r/Bitcoin

AMA request - Michael Marquardt aka Theymos /Bitcoin submitted by BitcoinAllBot to BitcoinAll [link] [comments]

Everyone should calm down. The upgrade to 2x has 95%+ miner support and will be as smooth as a hot knife through butter. Anyone that says otherwise is fear monguring or listening to r/bitcoin propaganda.

Keep in mind that bitcoin.org, bitcointalk and bitcoin are all controlled by one guy (Theymos/Michael Marquardt). He is a nut case that is bent on keeping Bitcoin centralized around a group of 5 people in BitcoinCore.
BitcoinCore used to be great, but when Mike Hearn and Jeff Garzik left, and after Gavin Andresen stepped down as lead dev, BitcoinCore as a group was no longer great. It ended up turning into an immature group of mediocre devs that rode on the coat-tails of legends.
The newer devs haven't been around since the beginning. They don't stand for Bitcoin as a decentralized system. They want Bitcoin to be crippled so that off-chain, non-Bitcoin solutions can put Bitcoin in the hands of bankers like AXA. It's a short-sighted attempt that will fail. That was never the ethos of Bitcoin.
They've lost the argument and are now about to be abandoned by a community that wants Bitcoin to grow. It's their own hubris and incompetence that is at fault for any chain splits that have or will happen. Remember, they already lied saying their reason for not adopting a hardfork blocksize increase was to avoid a chain split. Now they're trying to force one against the will of the 95% majority.
The upgrade to NYA will be smooth because in Bitcoin land hashrate is king.

A public appeal to Michael Marquardt the original Theymos.

In this thread on Bitcoin Talk OG Dev Mike Hearn talks about people using their real names.
Original Theymos said on May 19, 2011 :
At some point I might want to take credit for my Bitcoin activities, so I don't want to use a fake name. In fact, I would list Bitcoin Block Explorer on my résumé if I was applying for a relevant job this year, since that's the biggest and most public programming project I've ever done.
Using a non-obvious pseudonym might be a good idea for people who want to be anonymous. It adds some apparent credibility, I think.
I am going to offer some speculation:
The bitcoin subreddit, @bitcoin twitter handle, blockexplorer and Bitcoin talk forums were all started by the same person. He was known to be quite young at the time (19?). He was given the opportunity to sell his accounts on reddit and bitcoin talk for a large amount of money. He however maintained the twitter handle and blockexplorer for himself and was not included in the deal. At the time he thought that it wouldn't really matter as he would basically be offloading all his volunteer hours to another person and get paid to boot. Only later did the narrative drastically change under this new ownership. Now that bch is around original Theymos has come back and is giving his support publicly to the project he thinks is most valid.
Michael Marquardt, before you seemed to care so much about bitcoin. You seemed to want to solidify your name as being one of the good guys in bitcoin history. Perhaps after the gox collapse you saw your nest egg wiped out and were handed a life line by some benefactor. I do not know what happened. Perhaps it is you now who is pushing for change on twitter and blockexplorer. I have no evidence to back any of these ideas up. But if it is true. Now is the perfect time to come forward and help the community by telling us what actually happened. We are a forgiving bunch. People make mistakes. If I am right, it seems you have already started to try to make amends. You couldn't have known the monster they would have made of the name "Theymos" that isn't you and it souldn't be the you we all remember.

A brief history of the attempted takeover of Bitcoin by BlockstreamCore/The legacy banking systems/The Powers That Be

Bitcoin takes power away from the government, and gives it to the people. Bitcoin not only takes away power from governments, but also makes the legacy banking system obsolete.
You think The Powers That Be will let this happen without a fight? Think again. Blockstream was formed for the purpose of stifling the growth of Bitcoin. No, they are not simply a greedy corporation that wishes to profit off of Bitcoin. The sole reason for Blockstream's existence is to cripple Bitcoin and make it useless.
The following people have all been Blockstream employees, and are Bitcoin Core developers (besides Adam Back):
Blockstream received $76 million in funding from AXA, one of the largest multinational insurance corporations in the world, whose (former) CEO and Chairman, Henri de Castries, is also Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Bilderberg Group.
Satoshi's vision for Bitcoin was to allow massive on-chain scaling so the entire world could use it. The 1 MB block size limit exists only to intentionally create problems for Bitcoin, driving up the fees, and making the coin useless. Adam Back was added to Blockstream for the sole reason that he has some "clout" because he was mentioned in Satoshi's whitepaper. A new leader was needed to replace Satoshi, and fight against his vision. This is Adam Back.
The main communication channels (/Bitcoin, BitcoinTalk Forums, and Bitcoin.org) are all owned by a man named Michael Marquardt, AKA theymos. Theymos has most likely been threatened, or paid off by powerful people. /Bitcoin is completely censored for the purpose of controlling the narrative. The CSS of the subreddit was even drastically altered to hide the fact that hundreds of comments were being removed through systematic censorship. Any talk of raising the block size limit, or criticism of Blockstream or Core, will get you censored and banned. In order to take over Bitcoin, you must control the narrative, and trick people into thinking that crippling Bitcoin with high fees is a good thing.
Bitcoin XT was created to try and alleviate Bitcoin's scaling problems. When this project gained traction, and Coinbase started testing with Bitcoin XT, Coinbase was removed from Bitcoin.org. These intimidation tactics from the BlockstreamCore regime are extremely common. There have been too many of these social attacks to even list. For example, Roger Ver is often called a scammer, a felon, and a convicted criminal who went to prison for selling explosives. These are the typical ad hominem attacks used. Roger Ver, along with thousands of other people sold harmless firecrackers on eBay. People play with firecrackers (at their own risk) for fun, and to have a good time. They are also technically explosives. The law on the sale of these was also never enforced, and many people bought them off eBay. So although Roger is technically a criminal, because he committed a "crime", and he technically DID sell "explosives", people try to make you think that maybe Roger was actually a dangerous domestic terrorist arms-dealer who sold explosives as weapons.
Projects like Bitcoin Unlimited were created in an attempt to fix the scaling problems in Bitcoin, and gained widespread community support. But talk of BU in /Bitcoin was disallowed. BU was attacked viciously in every way shape and form. The developers were accused of running a scam, trying to purposely centralize Bitcoin, etc. BU was a major threat, because it would take power away from BlockstreamCore, and make Bitcoin great again. BU on many different occasions was attacked using exploits in its code, to shutdown BU nodes. These attacks were almost certainly done by members of Core, like Greg Maxwell. These events were widely publicized by /Bitcoin in an attempt to shame BU and prove that the developers are incompetent.
Over time, many other blatantly obvious astroturfing campaigns took place in order to control the narrative. UASF, NO2X, AntBleed, and ASICBoost were all bogus astroturfing campaigns meant to stir up controversy where there was none, and to "rally the troops".
In the early months of 2017, I witnessed a "community flippening" occur, in which there were more hardcore/legitimate members of the Bitcoin community in /btc, than in /Bitcoin. People were waking up to the censorship and social attacks that were occurring. The people who remain in /Bitcoin at this point are mostly newbies who have just entered the space, useful idiots who can't think for themselves and have undying loyalty to Core, and paid shills.
After realizing that BlockstreamCore will never compromise, Bitcoin Cash was created to restore Satoshi's original vision. Bitcoin Cash was immediately attacked in many ways. It was called ChinaCoin in an attempt to trick people into thinking it's a centrally controlled Chinese scam coin. It was called Bcash (and sometimes Btrash) in an attempt to take Bitcoin out of the name. When users posted about Bitcoin Cash in /Bitcoin, they were directed to post to the fake /Bcash subreddit. Bitfinex and Trezor even listed the coin as "Bcash" even though this just confused people more, as Bitcoin Cash was never referred to as Bcash by any of the development teams.
Bitcoin Cash was attacked relentlessly. When Coinbase and Bitstamp added Bitcoin Cash, /Bitcoin tried to rally the troops to boycott them. When the Bitcoin.com wallet added Bitcoin Cash, /Bitcoin attempted to rally the troops to leave hundreds of 1 star reviews on the app store.
Eventually a popular tipping bot called "tippr" was invented. Over a couple months, this gained massive traction and increased adoption substantially. Tippr was attacked in recent hacking attacks, where password reset links were sent to the emails of Reddit accounts, the passwords of these accounts were changed by the attackers, and then the Bitcoin Cash in their tippr balance was stolen. This was one of the greatest mistakes of the BlockstreamCore regime. It is now blatantly obvious that the email accounts of these users were not compromised. It is also unlikely that this is an exploit in Reddit itself. Reddit is the EIGHTH most popular website in the world, according to Alexa rank. A zero day exploit that allows ANY REDDIT ACCOUNT to be taken over, could potentially sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars on the black market. Yet the exploit was used to steal maybe $5,000 bucks tops, from a Bitcoin Cash tip bot? How come the tip bots of other cryptocurrencies were not targeted? The answer is because it wasn't about the money! Bitcoin Cash is one of the greatest threats in the cryptocurrency space, and it is being specifically targeted in many attacks. I don't expect Reddit to reveal any details of how the tippr hack was done.
Extremely powerful forces are behind the takeover of Bitcoin, and the attacks on Bitcoin Cash. For those of us that have been around a while, it's blatantly obvious what is happening.

Theymos, linked with the panama papers?

Theymos wants to remain anonymous as possible. His real name is expected to be Michael Marquardt. But it could be something else.
I was curious and did some digging. He owns bitcoin.it.
Bitcoin.it is registered at or being held by; Maria House, 1 Avlonos street Nicosia 1075
This address pops up in the Panama Papers
https://offshoreleaks.icij.org/nodes/12132915
He was responsible for creating a new internet forum and was given around 6800 BTC. These coins are now, gone. And no forum has been made. This is somewhere around 40 million.
I am not accusing him of anything but it all seems very strange to have his domain address popup at that location. I am however accusing him for stealing thousands of BTC and using it for his own good because the forum was never created or completed in full.
Hopefully there might be some others who can clarify more on Theymos, and perhaps he can share his real identity with us.

PSA, I've invited 3 new mods to /r/BTC

I've invited 3 new mods to /BTC. I see that singularity87 has already accepted, and hopefully the other two will soon too. This is partially in response to this post. For now, I'll give jratcliff63367 the benefit of the doubt, and assume he didn't know about Reddit's new rules allowing the posting of Theymos' real name due to him being a public figure at this point. Please be aware that I don't read Reddit direct messages, and don't have time to moderate things directly myself. If you need to reach me, please feel free to send an email. Thank you all for making /BTC a bastion of free speech, and a great place to get some of the latest Bitcoin news.

Partial list of words that automod removes from /r/bitcoin

I made a bot to check which words are automatically removed by automod in /bitcoin. Here's the code https://github.com/peoplma/automodbannedwords. It pulls the last 1000 comments from /btc and splits them into individual words to create a list, then comments each word in a thread I made on /bitcoin for that purpose, then uses a different account to check if the comment is there or not. It ran for a few days going through almost 3000 words before the mods noticed it and shadow-banned it. I'm not a very good coder and my script is not very robust, so I was depending on the mods not noticing it for it to work, but now that they have I'm releasing the code for anyone who wants to improve it. To be more robust, it should be able to detect when it's been shadowbanned by checking previous words that are confirmed to not get removed, then create a new account and continue checking the list. It should also remove punctuation, as this makes the list of words unnecessarily long, but I only noticed that part way through running it so decided to keep going anyway.
Anyway, to the results. All links to /btc were removed, so I'm omitting those to make the list shorter. If you want to link to this subreddit in /bitcoin, use the reddit shortened links i.e. https://redd.it/5vr7ij or https://www.reddit.com/5vr7ij for now at least those are not being removed.

Notable phrases that were not automodded:

Keep in mind, this uses comments on /btc to generate the list of words to check, so any words not allowed on both /btc and /bitcoin will not appear. I also had about 6,800 more words to check before they shadowbanned my bot, so this list is not complete.
It is also possible for automod to report comments that contain keywords to call attention to it for manual review by moderators, instead of being removed outright by automod. I have no good way of seeing which words trigger that.
Anytime you see any of the words on this list on /bitcoin, they have been manually approved by the mods.

The difference between ETH dev group and BCore dev group.

BSCore condemned ETH as a coin centralized by ETH foundation, yet judge for yourself which one is more centralized.
Ethereum developer Vlad Zamfir told attendees:
"These proposals, especially proposals that do set important precedents, that impact the relation of the community and the platform, I think need to be subject to a public debate that I'm not actually sure the EIP process is designed to handle."
Current Theymos who purchased bitcoin from the original Michael Marquardt.
It would have been far easier for me to simply allow XT. If I was a politician or a business, I probably would have bowed to community demands already. (I am not a democratic politician, instead I am the totalitarian lord of this BCore community)

In which country do Core developers live vs. Bitcoin Cash developers?

Is it true that all the Core developers live in the United States, while all the Bitcoin Cash developers live in other countries? Same with all the highly-vocal Core supporters (Andreas Antonopolous, Charlie Shrem, Max Keiser, etc.) and Core censors (Michael Marquardt, BashCo, etc.)?
If so, it seems to me like the Blockstream mafia was somehow able to infiltrate people in the U.S. (through whatever methods they could... starting with money but perhaps moving into threats of physical harm), but was unable to infiltrate people in other countries.

To those altcoin lovers/pumpers: Now that whole Bitcoin community has united to fire corrupt Core Committee, the cancer, then there is no fair reason for you to continue cursing Bitcoin. Time to get back on track.

The cancer does include not only corrupt Core Committee, but also Theymos and his kids such as BashCo.
Gavin was bamboozled by Vladimir so we lost Github/Bitcoin;
We lost Bitcoin, where Theymos and his kids leverages tricky censorship to spread lies and propaganda;
Theymos, whose name is Michael Marquardt, admins bitcoin.org and various discussion forums;
But so what?
Those resources should have belonged to Bitcoin community. There should have been public resources. Sadly, Those nine people inevitably saw it as their private privilege, and refuse to return it back to the community. And, their ownership of those public resources is protected by the legacy law.
We can't let those Nine "elders" decide the future of Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is here to stay, with or without those resources,

Always remember. You can choose not to support BTC without supporting BCH. This post is intended to show the people the truth. If you already know and you don't care, then you might as well choose not to comment.
BCH has been constantly under attack by FUD and misinformation from many people in this subreddit including /Bitcoin. Everything is now debunked.

So there is a successful protocol upgrade. What's next?

Will Michael marquardt continue to mislead new users by censoring bitcoin?
Bitcoin has lost so much user adoption momentum due to the censorship and Core/Blockstream ignoring users. How can we get this energy back?
For starters, I think we need to continue pushing for decentralized parameters to be set by nodes and miners.
Maybe we need some sort of voting mechanism for nodes that filters out VPS/duplicates/single-operator nodes, or some other unbiased way to gather community sentiment.
Colored coins, smart contracts.. Bitcoin should be able to handle all of this (even if off-chain via sidechains). What sort of timeline is there for adding Thomas Zander's FlexibleTransactions?
Lets be forward thinking. Post your ideas here. What do you think?

Fake Bitcointalk.org Donation Request Email Sent This Morning

I received a fake donation request email at 2AM this morning. My guess is it was sent by someone with access to the forums user data obtained from the recent hack. Gmail appropriately put it in the spam folder, so hopefully that helped prevent anyone from falling for this.
Aside from the poor grammar (I realize English is not everyone's first language so even giving the benefit of doubt there)... I can't imagine the forum would be soliciting donations given the controversy over the donations they have received and what they did or didn't do with them thus far. I'd also have a hard time believing that Bitcointalk would include a Litecoin address for donations. Also the Bitcoin donation address does not match the one listed on the forum. Although it doesn't mention the Bitcointalk.org domain specifically, it is clearly the forum it is referring to.
