Gridcoin 5.0.0.0-Mandatory "Fern" Release

https://github.com/gridcoin-community/Gridcoin-Research/releases/tag/5.0.0.0
Finally! After over ten months of development and testing, "Fern" has arrived! This is a whopper. 240 pull requests merged. Essentially a complete rewrite that was started with the scraper (the "neural net" rewrite) in "Denise" has now been completed. Practically the ENTIRE Gridcoin specific codebase resting on top of the vanilla Bitcoin/Peercoin/Blackcoin vanilla PoS code has been rewritten. This removes the team requirement at last (see below), although there are many other important improvements besides that.
Fern was a monumental undertaking. We had to encode all of the old rules active for the v10 block protocol in new code and ensure that the new code was 100% compatible. This had to be done in such a way as to clear out all of the old spaghetti and ring-fence it with tightly controlled class implementations. We then wrote an entirely new, simplified ruleset for research rewards and reengineered contracts (which includes beacon management, polls, and voting) using properly classed code. The fundamentals of Gridcoin with this release are now on a very sound and maintainable footing, and the developers believe the codebase as updated here will serve as the fundamental basis for Gridcoin's future roadmap.
We have been testing this for MONTHS on testnet in various stages. The v10 (legacy) compatibility code has been running on testnet continuously as it was developed to ensure compatibility with existing nodes. During the last few months, we have done two private testnet forks and then the full public testnet testing for v11 code (the new protocol which is what Fern implements). The developers have also been running non-staking "sentinel" nodes on mainnet with this code to verify that the consensus rules are problem-free for the legacy compatibility code on the broader mainnet. We believe this amount of testing is going to result in a smooth rollout.
Given the amount of changes in Fern, I am presenting TWO changelogs below. One is high level, which summarizes the most significant changes in the protocol. The second changelog is the detailed one in the usual format, and gives you an inkling of the size of this release.

Highlights

Protocol

Note that the protocol changes will not become active until we cross the hard-fork transition height to v11, which has been set at 2053000. Given current average block spacing, this should happen around October 4, about one month from now.
Note that to get all of the beacons in the network on the new protocol, we are requiring ALL beacons to be validated. A two week (14 day) grace period is provided by the code, starting at the time of the transition height, for people currently holding a beacon to validate the beacon and prevent it from expiring. That means that EVERY CRUNCHER must advertise and validate their beacon AFTER the v11 transition (around Oct 4th) and BEFORE October 18th (or more precisely, 14 days from the actual date of the v11 transition). If you do not advertise and validate your beacon by this time, your beacon will expire and you will stop earning research rewards until you advertise and validate a new beacon. This process has been made much easier by a brand new beacon "wizard" that helps manage beacon advertisements and renewals. Once a beacon has been validated and is a v11 protocol beacon, the normal 180 day expiration rules apply. Note, however, that the 180 day expiration on research rewards has been removed with the Fern update. This means that while your beacon might expire after 180 days, your earned research rewards will be retained and can be claimed by advertising a beacon with the same CPID and going through the validation process again. In other words, you do not lose any earned research rewards if you do not stake a block within 180 days and keep your beacon up-to-date.
The transition height is also when the team requirement will be relaxed for the network.

GUI

Besides the beacon wizard, there are a number of improvements to the GUI, including new UI transaction types (and icons) for staking the superblock, sidestake sends, beacon advertisement, voting, poll creation, and transactions with a message. The main screen has been revamped with a better summary section, and better status icons. Several changes under the hood have improved GUI performance. And finally, the diagnostics have been revamped.

Blockchain

The wallet sync speed has been DRASTICALLY improved. A decent machine with a good network connection should be able to sync the entire mainnet blockchain in less than 4 hours. A fast machine with a really fast network connection and a good SSD can do it in about 2.5 hours. One of our goals was to reduce or eliminate the reliance on snapshots for mainnet, and I think we have accomplished that goal with the new sync speed. We have also streamlined the in-memory structures for the blockchain which shaves some memory use.
There are so many goodies here it is hard to summarize them all.
I would like to thank all of the contributors to this release, but especially thank @cyrossignol, whose incredible contributions formed the backbone of this release. I would also like to pay special thanks to @barton2526, @caraka, and @Quezacoatl1, who tirelessly helped during the testing and polishing phase on testnet with testing and repeated builds for all architectures.
The developers are proud to present this release to the community and we believe this represents the starting point for a true renaissance for Gridcoin!

Summary Changelog

Accrual

Changed

Most significantly, nodes calculate research rewards directly from the magnitudes in EACH superblock between stakes instead of using a two- or three- point average based on a CPID's current magnitude and the magnitude for the CPID when it last staked. For those long-timers in the community, this has been referred to as "Superblock Windows," and was first done in proof-of-concept form by @denravonska.

Those large Bitcoin Cash transactions are not what you think they are

I've decided to take a look at these large transactions that occurred on Bitcoin Cash yesterday. I have analyzed them to see what they are doing, and it is actually kind of funny. Contrary to popular belief, those transactions are not preparation transactions for the attack presented by _chjj yesterday, and I will explain why below.
For starters, lets look at the large transactions. There are 7 of them: https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/ac4849b3b03e44d5fcba8becfc642a8670049b59436d6c7ab89a4d3873d9a3ef, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/1bd4f08ffbeefbb67d82a340dd35259a97c5626368f8a6efa056571b293fae52, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/c0472d267c8d178804eefdddb348f2f7a8a95bf6a4152b952a5fb6bfa09cab2e, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/27cb862d9c4c7eaace8d901e89365f2e843572788b774b14e5675fd9107d6637, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/b87d1dc8c0f3b450f1c1a845a5561ad87d850173b852c6839de6eb04441dfc7f, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/fc3e3bbd49ad6a6e87e7220f380b24ae86e566b1d26d0e40fb5250e54a25dc2a, https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/dbd3f7518111d679c1b229af71181c9395e3bf8c1370b6856376f391d25c883e. Each of these transactions has 31243 identical P2SH outputs of 1 satoshi each, and one change output. So at first glance, these look a lot like attack transactions for _chjj's attack. But looking closer, it looks like the first output of each transaction has been spent in https://bch-bitcore2.trezor.io/tx/36a094b53ef46b1ffdfd853079be9f21da4a5f789dd28c9d7c6d84770a7b5c1d. Lets take a closer look at that transaction
36a094b53ef46b1ffdfd853079be9f21da4a5f789dd28c9d7c6d84770a7b5c1d is strangely large for a transaction spending P2SH outputs, it is nearly 70 kB but only spends 7 inputs. This means that those inputs must be massive, almost 10 kB each, which, incidentally, is the size limit for a scriptSig. Unfortunately block explorers based on insight aren't showing us the scriptSig, so this will need to be decoded with a node.
Here is the decoded output (I have cut out a few things because it is too large):

Well that is a very interesting script. So lets explore what this script is doing. OP_OVER means that the top stack item is copied, e.g. x1 x2 -> x1 x2 x1. OP_EQUALVERIFY means that the top two stack items must be equal to each other and they are consumed. There are 55 OP_OVER OP_EQUALVERIFY pairs here, which means that something will need to be repeated 55 times. At the end of the script, we see this byte string and then OP_EQUAL. That means that whatever is being repeated much match this byte string in order for this script to validate. The scriptSig that this redeemScript comes from does exactly that, the byte string at the bottom of the script are repeated a bunch of times. And it looks like all of the 7 scripts do basically the same thing, but with different length byte strings. Now lets see what our byte strings are.

Looking more closely at these scripts, we see that there are repeating sequences, and they are different lengths. This means that it isn't just random garbage. Well the first thing to try is to see if this hex results in any ascii, and what do you know, this is what we get for the first string:
I will not clone Bitcoin for personal gain I will not clone Bitcoin for personal gain I will not clone Bitcoin for personal gain I will not clone Bitcoin for personal gain
Huh. That's interesting. I think someone is being mocked. Lets see what the rest are:
I will not use assert(0) for input validation I will not use assert(0) for input validation I will not use assert(0) for input validation Writing gibberish equations on a blackboard does not make me look smart Writing gibberish equations on a blackboard does not make me look smart I will not worship a false satoshi I will not worship a false satoshi I will not worship a false satoshi I will not worship a false satoshi I am not a FDIC-insured bank I am not a FDIC-insured bank I am not a FDIC-insured bank I am not a FDIC-insured bank I am not a FDIC-insured bank High explosives and mail don't mix High explosives and mail don't mix High explosives and mail don't mix High explosives and mail don't mix They are laughing at me, not with me They are laughing at me, not with me They are laughing at me, not with me They are laughing at me, not with me
So it seems that someone is just mocking you all. They have put these mocking strings in a redeemScript and require you to repeat them in order to spend them. This kind of reminds me of Bart Simpson performing his punishment of writing sentences over and over on a chalkboard. The other thing that this does is that in order to clean up the thousands of outputs, you will need to spend 10 kB per output, which will severely bloat your blockchain. Or you can just leave them in the UTXO set which will bloat the UTXO set with dust. But what to do with these is something you all will need to deal with, I'm just here to see what was up with these transactions.
As for why these transactions don't work for _chjj's attack, they require that the spending transactions be very large. But that is not ideal because for that attack to work, the spends need to be very small so that more spends can fit in one block which will increase memory usage. These transactions are not good for that since you can only fit a much smaller number of transactions in a block so the memory blow up is way less.
Edit: I don't support Bitcoin Cash, which is why I say that this is "your problem". I just thought this was interesting as it looked like it could impact Bitcoin as well, which is why I investigated this.

WitLess Mining - Removing Signatures from Bitcoin Cash

WitLess Mining

A Selfish Miner Variant to Remove Signatures from Bitcoin Cash
WitLess Mining is a hypothetical adversarial hybrid fork leveraging a variant of the selfish miner strategy to remove signatures from Bitcoin Cash. By orphaning blocks produced by miners unwilling to blindly accept WitLess blocks without validation, a miner or cartel of collaborating miners with a substantial, yet less than majority, share of the total Bitcoin Cash network hash power can alter the Nash equilibrium of Bitcoin Cash’s economic incentives, enticing otherwise honest miners to engage in non-validated mining. Once a majority of network hash power has switched to non-validated mining it will be possible to steal arbitrary UTXOs using invalid signatures - even non-existent signatures. As miners would risk losing all of their prior rewards and fees were signatures to be released that prove their malfeasance, it could even be possible to steal coins using non-existent transactions, leaving victims no evidence to prove the theft occurred.
WitLess Mining introduces two new data structures, the WitLess Transaction (wltx) and the WitLess Transaction Input (wltxin). These data structures are modifications of their standard counterpart data structures, Transaction (tx) and Transaction Input (txin), and can be used as drop-in replacements to create a WitLess Block (wlblock). These new structures provide WitLess Miners signature-withheld (WitLess) transaction data sufficient to reliably update their local UTXO sets based on the transactions contained within a WitLess block while preventing validation of the transaction signature scripts.
The specific mechanism by which WitLess Mining transaction and block data will be communicated among WitLess miners is left as an exercise for the reader. The author suggests it may be possible to extend the existing Bitcoin Cash gossip network protocol to handle the new WitLess data structures. Until WitLess Mining becomes well-adopted, it may be preferable to implement an out-of-band mechanism for releasing WitLess transactions and blocks as service. In order to offset potential revenue reduction due to the selfish mining strategy, the WitLess Mining cartel might provide a distribution service under a subscription model, offering earlier updates for higher tiers. An advanced distribution system could even implement a per-block bidding option, creating a WitLess information market.
Regardless of the distribution mechanism chosen, the risk having their blocks orphaned will provide strong economic incentive for rational short-term profit-maximizing agents to seek out WitLess transaction and block data. To encourage other segments of the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem to adopt WitLess Mining, the WitLess data structures are designed specifically to facilitating malicous fee-based transaction replacement:
It is expected that fee-based transaction replacement will be particularly popular among malicious users wishing to defraud 0-conf accepting merchants as well as the vulnerable merchants themselves. The feature is likely to encourage higher fees from the users resulting in their WitLess transaction data fetching a premium price under subscription- or market-based distribution. Malicious users may also be interested in subscribing directly to a WitLess Mining distribution service in order to receive notification when the cartel is in a position to reliably orphan non-compliant blocks, during which time their efforts will be most effective.

WitLess Block - wlblock

The wlblock is an alternate serialization of a standard block, containing the set of wltx as a direct replacement of the tx records. The hashMerkleRoot of a wlblock should be identical to the corresponding value in the standard block and can verified to apply to a set of txid by constructing a Merkelized root of txid_commitments from the wltx set. The same proof of work validation that applies to the standard block header also ensures legitimacy of the wltx set thanks to a WitLess Commitment included as an input to the coinbase tx.

WitLess Transaction - wltx

Field Size Description Data type Comments
4 version int32_t Transaction data format version as it appears in the corresponding tx
2 flag uint8_t[2] Always 0x5052 and indicates that the transaction is WitLess
1+ wltx_in count var_int Number of WitLess transaction inputs (never zero)
41+ wltx_in wtx_in[] A list of 1 or more WitLess transaction inputs or sources for coins
1+ tx_out count var_int Number of transaction outputs as it appears in the corresponding tx
9+ tx_out tx_out[] A list of 1 or more transaction outputs or destinations for coins as it appears in the corresponding tx
4 lock_time uint32_t The block number or timestamp at which this transaction is unlocked. This can vary from the corresponding tx, with the higher of the two taking precedence.
Each wltx can be referenced by a wltxid generated in way similar to the standard txid.

WitLess Transaction Input - wltxin

Field Size Description Data type Comments
36 previous_output outpoint The previous output transaction reference as it appears in the corresponding txin
1+ script length var_int The length of the signature script as it appears in the corresponding txin
32 or 0 txid_commitment char[32] Only for the first the wltxin of a transaction, the txid of the tx containing the corresponding txin; omitted for all subsequent wltxin entries
4 sequence uint32_t Transaction version as defined by the sender. Intended for replacement of transactions when sender wants to defraud 0-conf merchants. This can vary from the corresponding txin, with the lower of the two taking precedence.

WitLess Commitment Structure

A new block rule is added which requires a commitment to the wltxid. The wltxid of coinbase WitLess transaction is assumed to be 0x828ef3b079f9c23829c56fe86e85b4a69d9e06e5b54ea597eef5fb3ffef509fe.
A witless root hash is calculated with all those wltxid as leaves, in a way similar to the hashMerkleRoot in the block header.
The commitment is recorded in a scriptPubKey of the coinbase tx. It must be at least 42 bytes, with the first 10-byte of 0x6a284353573e3d534e43, that is:
 1-byte - OP_RETURN (0x6a) 1-byte - Push the following 40 bytes (0x28) 8-byte - WitLess Commitment header (0x4353573e3d534e43) 32-byte - WitLess Commitment hash: Double-SHA256(witless root hash) 43rd byte onwards: Optional data with no consensus meaning
If there are more than one scriptPubKey matching the pattern, the one with highest output index is assumed to be the WitLess commitment.

WitLess Pt2 - Smashing the Chain for Fun and Profit

WitLess Mining Part 2

Smashing the Chain for Fun and Profit

My previous post on WitLess Mining was not very well received. The post assumed a familiarity with the function and limitations of Rizun’s original attack, as well as the technical details of block construction, making it relatively unapproachable for many readers. In defense of the original claims against Segwit, many comments asserted that the strategy was substantially different than the attack Rizun proposed. In order to help determine the commonality and difference between these attacks, I’m providing a more approachable outline of the WitLess Mining attack.
Instead of simply dismissing the attack outright, I encourage commenters to identify specific areas where WitLess Mining diverges from Rizun’s attack against Segwit and how that impacts the outcome. If nothing else, it serves as an opportunity to explore assumptions that you might hold about the Segwit attack.

Roles

Role Description
Cartel A single miner or collaborating group of miners with a substantial, but less-than-majority, share of network hash rate. Cartel operates as a single entity, although it may at times self-identify as any number of smaller entities. In a multi-miner Cartel, there is an internal trust relationship between members; at a minimum, members must be trusted to withhold standard blocks until release is necessary to orphan honest chains.
Collaborators Non-Cartel miners who recognize the incentive to mine on top of the Cartel’s WitLess blocks without validation
Honest Miners Ostensibly the majority of miners. Following the customary rules of the chain with full validation of blocks before acceptance.

Chain States (Early Stage):

A WitLess chain is one in which there is at least one WitLess block. Standard blocks can extend a WitLess chain but are not considered Honest as they cannot be validated independent of the WitLess blocks. Once the standard forms of a WitLess chain are made available, the entire chain can be validated and, if it is the longest chain, is also Honest.
Chain State Description Next State (Honest Wins) Next State (WitLess Wins)
Pure Neutral The longest chain is fully validated. No hidden blocks building from it are known or suspected to exist. Pure Neutral WitLess Advantage
Contested There are two known chains of equal length, a WitLess chain and an Honest chain . Pure Neutral (Honest orphans WitLess) WitLess Advantage
WitLess Advantage There are two known chains; the honest chain is exactly one block shorter than the WitLess chain. Run Off Pure WitLess
Run Off There are two known chains of equal length, the WitLess chain has been validated. Pure Neutral (Honest orphans WitLess) Pure Neutral (WitLess orphans Honest)
Pure WitLess The longest chain contains at least one WitLess block and is d blocks ahead of the honest chain, where d>1 d<2 Pure Neutral (WitLess orphans Honest); d>1 Pure WitLess (d-1) Pure WitLess (d+1)

Assumptions (Early Stage):

A1: Cartel desires to entice Honest Miners into becoming Collaborators.
Rationale: The more hash power controlled by Collaborators, the faster the WitLess chain will be extended, leading to less frequent orphaned WitLess blocks and longer durations spent in Pure WitLess chain state.
A2: Cartel is truthful about consensus-level validity of WitLess blocks they release or bless.
Rationale: WitLess blocks serve as proof of the withheld chain. If the withheld chain cannot be validated it cannot orphan the honest chain. Hash power spent building a consensus-invalid chain would be wasted.
A3: Cartel is truthful about WitLess commitments validity in WitLess blocks they release or bless.
Rationale: See A1. Cartel’s history of truthfulness is exposed for all to see. Truthful WitLess commitments enable Collaborators to earn fees which entices more Honest Miners to become Collaborators. Valid blocks accepting WitLess blocks extend Cartel's WitLess chain. Cartel cannot extend the WitLess chain with invalid blocks. Invalid WitLess commitments risk Collaborators building invalid blocks and discourages Honest Miners from becoming Collaborators. It is in Cartel’s best interest to provide truthful WitLess commitments.
A4: Only WitLess blocks released or blessed by Cartel are to be trusted by Collaborators. Everyone is free to validate and build on standard blocks.
Rationale: See A2 and A3. If WitLess blocks are accepted from anyone other than Cartel, there is no reason to trust the consensus-level validity of the block nor the accuracy of the WitLess commitment. Accepting non-Cartel WitLess blocks risks exposing Collaborators as accepting invalid blocks, introducing a new chain-state transition orphaning poisoned WitLess chains.
A5: Collaborators generate standard blocks. These may be publicly released or provided directly to Cartel in order to be blessed.
Rationale: See A4. WitLess blocks released directly by Collaborators cannot be used to extend the WitLess chain. WitLess transactions released by Cartel can be included in Collaborators blocks only if the block is blessed. Private release of Collaborator blocks to Cartel could be used as a form of payment for tiered subscription distribution; Collaborators who provide discovered blocks privately receive earlier access to the WitLess transactions making up a block.

Attack Outline

Cartel announces their intent to engage in WitLess Mining and provides a distribution mechanism for WitLess transaction and block data.
Cartel discovers their first block, releasing only the WitLess form and achieving WitLess Advantage chain-state. If the WitLess chain is extended before the honest miners discover their first block, the chain-state transitions to Pure WitLess. Cartel can orphan every honest block from this point forward until WitLess chain lead is reduced to one block.
After multiple rounds of this, Cartel gains a reputation for being truthful. Rational short-term profit-motivated actors willing to engage in validationless mining become Collaborators and begin to extend the WitLess chain during Pure WitLess chain-states to avoid having their blocks orphaned. Rational short-term profit-motivated actors unwilling to engage in validationless mining stop mining during Pure WitLess chain-states or redirect their capacity to other blockchains to prevent wasted work. Dogmatic honest miners continue extending the honest chain, periodically forcing Cartel to release the standard form of blocks in order to orphan the honest chain.
Malicious users recognize the utility of WitLess Mining for performing transaction replacement to engage in fraud. Begin to submit transactions to Cartel with high locktime and low sequence settings shortly before broadcasting standard versions. Because Cartel can validate the submitted transactions, they can release WitLess forms to Collaborators to be included in the Collaborators’ blocks.
Merchants recognize the utility of monitoring WitLess distribution to know when confirmation on the honest chain is at high risk of being orphaned. Although 0-conf is at highest risk, any transaction confirmed during a Pure WitLess chain-state phase is subject to replacement regardless of confirmations.
As dogmatic honest miners face increasing rates of orphaned blocks and drop out of mining, Pure WitLess phases become longer in duration. Eventually efficient use of the coin requires observation of the WitLess chain and validationless confirmations are accepted as ‘good enough’. Reliability of the blockchain is crippled, but as long as sufficient user confidence remains, Cartel can continue WitLess Mining. Fees from distribution subscriptions and income from replacement-enabled fraud can subsidize reduced value of the network’s coin due to WitLess Mining.
If, for some reason, user confidence remains even after the dogmatic honest miners have given up and the coin has become reliant on a WitLess chain which no one but Cartel can validate, Cartel is free to steal any unspent outputs. Transactions with invalid signatures or WitLess transactions that have no standard counterpart can be issued which miners and other participants in the ecosystem accept and use to update their UTXO sets. Theft of coins in this way cannot be proven as Cartel will not release an invalid signature and no one can demonstrate a non-existent transaction.

Comparison with Segwit Model

This is the same attack strategy (plus additional methods of revenue) as the Segwit model proposed by Rizun. One point that detractors might attempt to make is that Segwit does not require Assumption 3 as inaccurate transaction information in witness-withheld blocks would cause the block to eventually be invalidated. This is true (and ironically demonstrates that not only does Segwit not remove any data integrity checks, it actually includes additional checks) but this does not alter the Nash Equilibrium of the strategy. The WitLess Mining strategy undertaken by Cartel is not advanced by inducing Collaborators to generate invalid blocks; in fact, doing so would reduce the effectiveness dramatically.
Rizun’s claim that Bitcoin miners cannot update their UTXO sets without witnessing signatures is obviously incorrect. Direct knowledge of the signatures from a transaction is not a requirement for updating the UTXO, miners only need to know the spent outpoints and the new outputs created. TxIDs are a hash of the prior transaction and knowledge of a cryptographic hash does not convey any information about the data from which it is generated. WitLess Mining exploits this fact to enable validationless mining on Bitcoin with the same assumptions and risks as Segwit.

Qtum original design document summary -- Qtum new OPCODE
As we all know, Qtum uses the same UTXO model as Bitcoin. The original UTXO script was not compatible with the EVM account model, so Qtum added three OP_CREATE, OP_CALL, and OP_SPEND opcodes to the UTXO transaction script for the purpose of providing operational support for conversions between UTXO and EVM account models. The original names of the three opcodes are OP_EXEC(OP_CREATE), OP_EXEC_ASSIGN(OP_CALL) and OP_TXHASH(OP_SPEND), respectively.
The following is an excerpt of representative original documents for interested readers.
OP_CREATE (or OP_EXEC**)**
OP_CREATE (or OP_EXEC) is used to create a smart contract. The original design files (with Chinese translation) related to this opcode by the Qtum development team are as follows (ps: QTUM <#> or QTUMCORE<#> in the document numbering internal design documents. ):
QTUMCORE-3:Add EVM and OP_CREATE for contract execution Description:After this story, the EVM should be integrated and a very basic contract should be capable of being executed. There will be a new opcode, OP_CREATE (formerly OP_EXEC), which takes 4 arguments, in push order: 1. VM version (currently 1 is EVM) 2. Gas price (not yet used, anything is valid) 3. Gas limit (not yet used, assume very high limit) 4. bytecodeFor now it is OK that this script format be forced and mandatory for OP_CREATE transactions on the blockchain. (ie, only "standard" allowed on the blockchain) When OP_CREATE is encountered, it should execute the EVM and persist the contract to a database (triedb) Note: Make sure to follow policy for external code (commit vanilla unmodified code first, and then change it as needed) Make the EVM test suite functional as well (someone else can setup continuous integration changes for it though)
The above document describes the functions required by OP_CREATE and the parameters used.

OP_CALL (or OP_EXEC_ASSIGN)

OP_CALL is used for contract execution and is one of the most commonly used opcodes. There are many descriptions in the original design document.
QTUM6: Implement calling environment info in EVM for OP_EXEC_ASSIGN
Description: Solidity expects certain information to be pushed onto the stack as part of it's ABI. So, when data is sent into the contract using OP_EXEC_ASSIGN we need to make sure to provide this data. This data includes the Solidity "function selector" as well as ensuring the opcodes CALLER and ORIGIN function properly. This looks to be fairly easy, it should just be transferring some data from the Bitcoin stack to the EVM stack, and setting some fields for the origin info. However, this story should be split into multiple tasks and re-evaluated if it isn't easy. See also: https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Ethereum-Contract-ABI For populating the CALLER and ORIGIN value, the following should be done: OP_EXEC_ASSIGN should take 2 extra arguments, SENDER and SENDER_SIGNATURE. Sender should be a public key. Sender Signature is the signature of all the vins for the current transaction, signed of course using the SENDER value. On the EVM side, CALLER's value will be a public key hash, ie, a hash of the SENDER public key. This public key hash should be compatible with Bitcoin's public key hash for it's standard version 1 addresses. IF the given SENDER_SIGNATURE does not match successfully, then the transaction should be considered invalid. If the SENDER public key is 0, then SENDER_SIGNATURE must also be 0, and the given CALLER opcode etc should just return 0.
The above document describes the OP_EXEC_ASSIGN calling environment information that needs to be implemented in the EVM.
QTUM8: Implement OP_EXEC_ASSIGN for sending money to contracts
Description: A new opcode should be added, OP_EXEC_ASSIGN. This opcode should take these arguments in push order: # version number (VM version to use, currently just 1)

gas price (can be ignored for now)

gas refund script (can be ignored for now)

data (The data to hand to the smart contract. This will include things like the Solidity ABI Function Selector and other data that will later be available using the CALLERDATA EVM opcode) # smart contract address (txid + vout number)

It should return two values right now, 0 and 0. These are for spendable and out of gas, respectively. Making them spendable and dealing with out of gas will be in a future storyFor this story, the EVM contract does not actually need to be executed. This opcode should only be a placeholder so that the accounting system can determine how much money a contract has control of
The above document describes the OP_EXEC_ASSIGN implementation details.
QTUM15: Execute the relevant contract during OP_EXEC_ASSIGN
Description: After this story is complete, when OP_EXEC_ASSIGN is reached, it should actually execute the contract whose address was given to it, passing the relevant data from the bitcoin script stack with it. Other data such as the caller and sender can be left for a later story. Making the CALLER, ORIGIN etc opcodes work properly will be fixed with a later story
The above document describes OP_EXEC_ASSIGN how the script runs the relevant contract code.
QTUM40: Allow contracts to send money to pubkeyhash addresses Description: We need to allow contracts to send money back to pubkeyhash addresses, so that people can withdraw their coins from contracts when allowed, etc. This should work similar to how version 0 contract sends work. Instead of using an OP_EXEC_ASSIGN vout though, we need to instead use a standard pubkeyhash script. So, upon spending to a pubkeyhash, the following transaction should be placed on the blockchain: vin: [standard contract OP_EXEC_ASSIGN inputs] ... vout: OP_DUP OP_HASH160 [pubKeyHash] OP_EQUALVERIFY OP_CHECKSIG change output - version 0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN back to spending contract These outputs should be directly spendable in the wallet with no changes to the wallet code itself
The above document describes how to allow contracts to send QTUM to pubkeyhash addresses.
QTUMCORE-10:Add ability for contracts to call other deployed contracts Description:Contracts should be capable of calling other contracts using a new opcode, OP_CALL. Arguments in push order:version (32 bit integer) gas price (64 bit integer) gas limit (64 bit integer) contract address (160 bits) data (any length) OP_CALL should ways return false for now. OP_CALL only results in contract execution when used in a vout; Similar to OP_CREATE, it uses the special rule to process the script during vout processing (rather than when spent as is normal in Bitcoin). Contract execution should only be triggered when the transaction script is in this standard format and has no extra opcodes. If OP_CALL is created that uses an invalid contract address, then no contract execution should take place. The transaction should still be valid in the blockchain however. If money was sent with OP_CALL, then that money (minus the gas fees) should result in a refund transaction to send the funds back to vin[0]'s vout script. The "sender" exposed to EVM should be the pubkeyhash spent by vin[0]. If the vout spent by vin[0] is not a pubkeyhash, then the sender should be 0.Funds can be sent to the contract using an OP_CALL vout. These funds will be handled by the account abstraciton layer in a different story, to expose this to the EVM. Multiple OP_CALLS can be used in a single transaction. However, before contract execution, the gas price and gas limit of each OP_CALL vout should be checked to ensure that the transaction provides enough transaction fees to cover the gas. Additionally, this should be verified even when the contract is not executed, such as when it is accepted in the mempool.
The above document describes how the contract calls other contracts via OP_CALL.

OP_SPEND (or OP_TXHASH, OP_EXEC_SPEND)

OP_SPEND is used for the cost of the contract balance. Because the contract address is a special address, in order to ensure consensus, the UTXO needs to be specially processed. Therefore, there are more descriptions of the OP_SPEND operation code in the original design document.
QTUM20: Create OP_EXEC_SPEND transaction when a contract spends money
Description: When a CALL opcode or similar to used from an EVM contract to send another contract money, this should be shown on the blockchain as a new transaction. When a money transfer is done in the contract, the miner should add a new transaction exactly after the currently processing transaction in the block. This transaction should spend an input owned by the contract by using EXEC_SPEND in it's redeemScript. For the purposes of this story, assume change is not something to be worried about and consume as many inputs are needed. Properly picking effecient coins and sending back money to the originating contract will come in a later story. Edge cases to watch for: The transaction for sending money to the contract must come directly after the executing transaction. The outputs should use a version-0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN vout, so that if the transaction were received out of context, it would still mean to not execute the contract.
The above document describes the timing of creating a OP_SPEND transaction.
QTUM21: Create consensus-critical change and coin-picking algorithm for OP_EXEC_SPEND transactions Description: Building on #20, now a consensus-critical algorithm must be made that picks the most optimal outputs belonging to the contract, and spends them, and also makes a change output that returns the "change" from the transaction back to the contract. All outputs in this case should be using a version-0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN, to avoid running into the limitation that prevents more than one (version 1) OP_EXEC_ASSIGN transaction from being in a single transaction. The transaction should have as many vins as needed, and exactly 2 vouts. The first vout to go to the target contract, and the second vout to send change back to the source contract.
QTUM22: Disallow more than one EVM execution per transaction
Description: In order to avoid significant edge cases, for now, disallow more than one EVM execution to take place in a single transaction. This includes both deployment and fund assignment vouts. Instead, such things should be split into multiple transactions If two EVM executions are encountered, the transaction should be treated as completely invalid and not suitable for broadcast nor putting into a block
QTUM23: Add "version 0" OP_EXEC_ASSIGN, which does not execute EVM Description: To counteract problems from #22, we should allow OP_EXEC_ASSIGN to be used to fund a contract without the contract actually being executed. This will be used later for "change" outputs to (multiple) contracts. If the version number passed in for OP_EXEC_ASSIGN is 0, then the contract is not executed. Also, this is only valid if the data provided to OP_EXEC_ASSIGN is just a single byte "0". Multiple version-0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN vouts should be valid in a transaction, or 1 non-version-0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN (or an OP_EXEC deployment) and multiple version-0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN vouts. This will be used for all money spending that is sent from a contract to another contract
The above three documents describe that if the consensus-associated coin-picking algorithm guarantees that the OP_SPEND opcode does not cause a consensus error, the correctness of the change is ensured. At the same time, it describes the situation where the contract does not need to be run and how it is handled.
QTUM34: Disallow OP_EXEC and OP_EXEC_ASSIGN from coinbase transactions Description: Because of problems with coinbase maturity and potential side effects from ordering of gas-refund scripts, it should not be legal for coinbase outputs to be anything which results in EVM execution or directly changing EVM account balances. This includes version 0 OP_EXEC_ASSIGN outputs.
The above document stipulates that coinbase transactions should not include contract-related scripts.

Other related documents

In addition, there are some documents describing the infrastructure needed for the new operation code.
QTUMCORE-51:Formalize the version field for OP_CREATE and OP_CALL Description:In order to sustain future extensions to the protocol, we need to set some rules for how we will later upgrade and add new VMs by changing the "version" argument to OP_CREATE and OP_CALL. We need a definitive VM version format beyond our current "just increment when doing upgrades". This would allow us to more easily plan upgrades and soft-forks. Proposed fields:
  1. VM Format (can be increased from 0 to extend this format in the future): 2 bits2. Root VM - The actual VM to use, such as EVM, Lua, JVM, etc: 6 bits
  2. VM Version - The version of the Root VM to use (for upgrading the root VM with backwards compatibility) - 8 bits
  3. Flag options - For flags to the VM execution and AAL: 16 bits Total: 32 bits (4 bytes). Size is important since it will be in every EXEC transaction Flag option bits that control contract creation: (only apply to OP_CREATE) • 0 (reserve) Fixed gas schedule - if true, then this contract chooses to opt-out of allowing different gas schedules. Using OP_CALL with a gas schedule other than the one specified in it's creation will result in an immediate exception and result in an out of gas refund condition • 1 (reserve) Enable contract admin interface (reserve only, this will be implemented later. Will allow contracts to control for themselves what VM versions and such they allow, and allows the values to be changed over the lifecycle of the contract) • 2 (reserve) Disallow version 0 funding - If true, this contract is not capable of receiving money through version 0 OP_CALL, other than as required for the account abstraction layer. • bits 3-15 available for future extensions Flag options that control contract calls: (only apply to OP_CALL) • (none yet) Flag options that control both contract calls and creation: • (none yet) These flags will be implemented in a later story Note that the version field now MUST be a 4 byte push. A standard EVM contract would now use the version number (in hex) "01 00 00 00" Consensus behavior: VM Format must be 0 to be valid in a block Root VM can be any value. 1 is EVM, 0 is no-exec. All other values result in no-exec (allowed, but the no execution, for easier soft-forks later) VM Version can be any value (soft-fork compatibility). If a new version is used than 0 (0 is initial release version), then it will execute using version 0 and ignore the value Flag options can be any value (soft-fork compatibility). (inactive flag fields are ignored) Standard mempool behavior: VM Format must be 0Root VM must be 0 or 1VM Version must be 0Flag options - all valid fields can be set. All fields that are not assigned must be set to 0Defaults for EVM: VM Format: 0Root VM: 1VM Version: 0Flags: 0
The above documents formally identified OP_CREATE and OP_CALL needed version information, paving the way for subsequent multi-virtual machine support for Qtum.
QTUMCORE-52:Contract Admin Interface Description:(note, this isn't a goal for mainnet, though it would be a nice feature to include) It should be possible to manage the lifecycle of a contract internally within the contract itself. Such variables and configuration values that might need to be changed over the course of a contract's lifecycle: • Allowable gas schedules
• Allowable VM versions (ie, if a future VM version breaks this contract, don't allow it to be used, as well as deprecating past VM versions from being used to interact with this contract) • Creation flags (the version flags in OP_CREATE) All of these variables must be able to be controlled within the contract itself, using decentralized code. For instance, in a DAO scenario, it might be something that participants can vote on within the contract, and then the contract triggers the code that changes these parameters. In addition, a contract should be capable of detecting it's own settings throughout it's execution as well as when it is initially created. I propose implementing this interface as a special pre-compiled contract. For a contract ot interact with it, it would call it using the Solidity ABI like any other contract. Proposed ABI for the contract: • bytes[2048] GasSchedule(int n) • int GasScheduleCount() • int AddGasSchedule(bytes[2048] • bytes[32] AllowedVMVersions() • void SetAllowedVMVersions(bytes[32]) Alternative implementations: There could be a specific Solidity function which is called in order to validate that the contract should allow itself to be called in a particular manner: pragma solidity 0.4.0; contract BlockHashTest {function BlockHashTest() { }function ValidateGasSchedule(bytes32 addr) public returns (bool) {if(addr=="123454") { return true; //allow contract to run }return false; //do not allow contract to run}function ValidateVMVersion(byte version) public returns (bool){if(version >= 2 && version < 10) { return true; //allow to run on versions 2-9. Say for example 1 had a vulnerability in it, and 10 broke the contract }return false; } } In this way a contract is responsible for managing it's own state. The basic way it would work is that when a you use OP_CALL to call a contract, it would first execute these two functions (and their execution would be included in gas costs). If either function returns false, then it immediately triggers an out of gas condition and cancels execution. It's slightly complicated to manage the "ValidateVMVersion" callback however, because we must decide which VM version to use. A bad one could cause this function itself to misbeha`ve.```````
pragma solidity 0.4.0; contract BlockHashTest {function BlockHashTest() { }function ValidateGasSchedule(bytes32 addr) public returns (bool) {if(addr=="123454") { return true; //allow contract to run }return false; //do not allow contract to run}function ValidateVMVersion(byte version) public returns (bool){if(version >= 2 && version < 10) { return true; //allow to run on versions 2-9. Say for example 1 had a vulnerability in it, and 10 broke the contract }return false; }
}
The above document describes the management interface of the contract, and yes the contract can manage its own status.
QTUMCORE-53:Add opt-out flags to contracts for version 0 sends Description:Some contracts may wish to opt-out of certain features in Qtum that are not present in Ethereum. This way more Ethereum contracts can be ported to Qtum without worrying about new features in the Qtum blockchain Two flag options should be added to the Version field, which only have an effect in OP_CREATE for creating the contract: 2. (1st bit) Disallow "version 0" OP_CALLs to this contract outside of the AAL. (DisallowVersion0)  If this is enabled, then an OP_CALL using "root VM 0" (which causes no execution) is not allowed to be sent to this contract. If money is attempted to be sent to this contract using "version 0" OP_CALL, then it will result in an out of gas exception and the funds should be refunded. Version 0 payments made internally within the Account Abstraction Layer should not be affected by this flag. Along with these new consensus rules, there should also be some standard mempool checks:
  1. If an OP_CALL tx uses a different gas schedule than the contract creation, and the disallow dynamic gas flag is set, then the transaction should be rejected from the mempool as a non-standard transaction (version 0 payments should not be allowed as standard transactions in the mempool anyway)
The above document describes how to get better EVM compatibility by ignoring certain Qtum specific features in order to port Ethereum contract code. This makes smart contracts in the Ethereum ecosystem more easily compatible with Qtum.

[email protected]: Those large Bitcoin Cash transactions are not what you think they are
https://www.reddit.com/btc/comments/6zg1gp/those_large_bitcoin_cash_transactions_are_not/ I've decided to take a look at these large transactions that occurred on Bitcoin Cash yesterday.

I just thought this was interesting as it looked like it could impact Bitcoin as well, which is why I investigated this. https://redd.it/6zg1gp
